Siemens confirmed its objective of becoming one of the three largest suppliers of wind turbines in the world by 2012.
The company began operations in the wind energy market five years ago, with the acquisition of Danish Bonus Energy. Since then, its activities in this area have experienced rapid development.
The number of people employed in the Siemens Wind Power Business Unit of the Energy Sector has grown by seven times, the turnover of ten.
The strategy of Siemens in the near future will be to strengthen its position as market leader globally in the offshore wind farms, while expanding the international production network in key markets and ensuring technology leadership with innovative products, such as gearless wind turbines and floats.
Offshore wind farms are becoming an increasingly important role: It is estimated that the potential for offshore wind in Europe is about 70 gigawatts, which is half of the current installed capacity of power plants in Germany. Currently, only 1, 5% of that potential is used.
In the last fiscal year, Siemens has secured the largest contract for wind energy ever signed: Dong Energy to supply 500 wind turbines of 3.6 megawatts.
Some of these turbines will be deployed in London Array offshore wind farm that will be the world's largest with a capacity of 850 megawatts. The contract signed in Germany also include the Baltic 1 wind farm offshore.
Siemens also deals with an important position in the market also onshore wind energy. In the last fiscal year, for example, the company has secured contracts for six wind farms in North America and the largest onshore wind farm in Europe, in Scotland. Recently I also got orders from Mexico and New Zealand.
Business Unit of Siemens Wind Power has pursued, in parallel, a strategy of further expanding the international network of production in key markets.
After installing a production of rotor blades in Fort Madison, Iowa (United States), Siemens has recently started building a production facility ships aHutchinson, Kansas (United States). A facility near Shanghai will begin production in 2010 rotor blades and nacelles, and an additional plant is planned in India.
Wind energy is part of the Siemens' environmental portfolio, which recorded a turnover of around 23 million euros in fiscal 2009. At the same time, Siemens products and services have enabled customers to reduce CO2 emissions by 210 million tons.
